RESUMO

The purification of oxygenated volatile organic compounds VOCs (OVOCs), important precursors of ozone and particulate matters, has triggered intensive research interests. UiO-66 with high photocatalytic activity have shown great potential. However, the lack of active sites severely limited the trapping and degradation of OVOCs. Herein, reo-UiO-66 with increased specific surface area, hierarchical porous structure and tunable acidic/basic sites was synthesized by simply adding water as the modulator. XRD, TGA and FTIR results confirmed the formation of reo-defects, which significantly affected the surface hydrophilicity and active sites of UiO-66. The adsorption of Lewis acidic acetaldehyde was enhanced by 265 times with coordinative unsaturated Zr acting as the dominant adsorption sites. The degradation efficiency of typical OVOCs (acetaldehyde and acetone) increased from 0% and 25% to 50% and 73%, respectively. This work provided a facile method to modulate the micro-environment in MOFs for the efficient capture and catalytic purification of OVOCs.

RESUMO

Advancements in cell coculture systems with porous membranes have facilitated the simulation of human-like in vitro microenvironments for diverse biomedical applications. However, conventional Transwell membranes face limitations in low porosity (ca. 6%) and optical opacity due to their large thickness (ca. 10 µm). In this study, we demonstrated a one-step, large-scale fabrication of freestanding polymer ultrathin porous (PUP) membranes with thicknesses of hundreds of nanometers. PUP membranes were produced by using a gap-controlled bar-coating process combined with polymer blend phase separation. They are 20 times thinner than Transwell membranes, possessing 3-fold higher porosity and exhibiting high transparency. These membranes demonstrate outstanding molecular permeability and significantly reduce the cell-cell distance, thereby facilitating efficient signal exchange pathways between cells. This research enables the establishment of a cutting-edge in vitro cell coculture system, enhancing optical transparency, and streamlining the large-scale manufacturing of porous membranes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Chaperonin-containing tailless complex polypeptide 1 subunit 6A (CCT6A) involves several solid cancers' development and progression, while its clinical utility in prostate cancer management is rarely revealed. Consequently, the present study intended to investigate the linkage of CCT6A with disease features, treatment information, and prognosis of surgical prostate cancer patients. METHODS: CCT6A in 220 surgical prostate cancer patients was determined via immunohistochemistry. Additionally, survival analyses on data from the public databases were performed to validate the prognostic value of CCT6A further. RESULTS: CCT6A expression was upregulated in tumor tissue than in adjacent tissue (P < 0.001). Increased CCT6A was related to elevated Gleason score (P < 0.001) and pathological T stage (P = 0.029). CCT6A was increased in patients with positive surgical margin status (vs. negative) (P = 0.029) and patients with adjuvant external-beam radiation therapy (vs. no) (P = 0.001). Concerning the prognostic value, high tumor CCT6A was linked with shortened disease-free survival (DFS) (P = 0.009), which was also validated through further Cox's proportional hazard regression model analyses (hazard ratio: 2.695, 95% CI: 1.086-6.683, P = 0.032), whereas CCT6A was not correlated with overall survival (OS) (P > 0.050). Additionally, the Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis database indicated that high tumor CCT6A was related to shortened DFS (P = 0.036), but it was not associated with OS (P > 0.050); meanwhile, the Human Protein Atlas database suggested that high tumor CCT6A was linked with reduced OS (P = 0.048). CONCLUSION: Tumor CCT6A high expression correlates with the elevated Gleason score, pathological T stage, and shortened DFS in surgical prostate cancer patients.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to determine the diagnostic criteria of myosteatosis in a Chinese population and investigate the effect of skeletal muscle abnormalities on the outcomes of cirrhotic patients. METHODS: Totally 911 volunteers were recruited to determine the diagnostic criteria and impact factors of myosteatosis, and 480 cirrhotic patients were enrolled to verify the value of muscle alterations for prognosis prediction and establish new noninvasive prognostic strategies. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis showed age, sex, weight, waist circumference, and biceps circumference had a remarkable influence on the L3 skeletal muscle density (L3-SMD). Based on the cut-off of a mean - 1.28 × SD among adults aged < 60 years, the diagnostic criteria for myosteatosis was L3-SMD < 38.93 Hu in males and L3-SMD < 32.82 Hu in females. Myosteatosis rather than sarcopenia has a close correlation with portal hypertension. The concurrence of sarcopenia and myosteatosis not only is associated with poor liver function but also evidently reduced the overall and liver transplantation-free survival of cirrhotic patients (p < 0.001). According to the stepwise Cox regression hazard model analysis, we established nomograms including TBil, albumin, history of HE, ascites grade, sarcopenia, and myosteatosis for easily determining survival probabilities in cirrhotic patients. The AUC is 0.874 (95% CI 0.800-0.949) for 6-month survival, 0.831 (95% CI 0.764-0.898) for 1-year survival, and 0.813 (95% CI 0.756-0.871) for 2-year survival prediction, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence of the significant correlation between skeletal muscle alterations and poor outcomes of cirrhosis, and establishes valid and convenient nomograms incorporating musculoskeletal disorders for the prognostic prediction of liver cirrhosis. Further large-scale prospective studies are necessary to verify the value of the nomograms.

RESUMO

Background and aims: Vitamin C, as an antioxidant, may play a role in the treatment of NAFLD. This research aimed to investigate the association of serum vitamin C levels with the risk of NAFLD and to further examine the causal relationship by Mendelian randomization (MR) method. Methods: The cross-sectional study selected 5,578 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2005-2006 and 2017-2018. The association of serum vitamin C levels with NAFLD risk was evaluated under a multivariable logistic regression model. A two-sample MR study, using genetic data from large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of serum vitamin C levels (52,014 individuals) and NAFLD (primary analysis: 1,483 cases /17,781 controls; secondary analysis: 1,908 cases/340,591 controls), was conducted to infer causality between them. The inverse-variance-weighted (IVW) was applied as the main method of MR analysis. A series of sensitivity analyzes were used to evaluate the pleiotropy. Results: In the cross-sectional study, results showed that Tertile 3 group (Tertile 3: ≥1.06 mg/dl) had a significantly lower risk (OR = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.48 ~ 0.74, p < 0.001) of NAFLD than Tertile 1 group (Tertile 1: ≤0.69 mg/dl) after full adjustments. In regard to gender, serum vitamin C was protective against NAFLD in both women (OR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.49 ~ 0.80, p < 0.001) and men (OR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.55 ~ 0.97, p = 0.029) but was stronger among women. However, in the IVW of MR analyzes, no causal relationship between serum vitamin C levels and NAFLD risk was observed in the primary analysis (OR = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.47 ~ 1.45, p = 0.502) and secondary analysis (OR = 0.80, 95% CI: 0.53 ~ 1.22, p = 0.308). MR sensitivity analyzes yielded consistent results. Conclusion: Our MR study did not support a causal association between serum vitamin C levels and NAFLD risk. Further studies with greater cases are warranted to confirm our findings.

RESUMO

Objective: This study aims to investigate the safety and efficacy of abrocitinib in treating moderate-to-severe AD in adolescents and adults. Methods: Pubmed, Cochrane, Embase, and Web of science data base were searched from inception to 9 August 2022. All randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy and safety of abrocitinib in moderate to severe AD were included in the meta-analysis. Results: This meta-analysis comprised 7 studies and found that 100 mg or 200 mg of abrocitinib significantly improved IGA {[RR = 2.44, 95% CI (1.93-3.08)] [RR = 3.16, 95% CI (2.52-3.96)]} and EASI-75{[RR = 2.18, 95%CI (1.78-2.67)] [RR = 3.04, 95%CI (2.22-4.16)]} responses compared to placebo. Following that, the population was divided into adolescent and adult groups. The abrocitinib improved IGA, EASI-75 responses, and it was still superior to placebo in both the adolescent and the adult groups. PP-NRS4 response index demonstrated that abrocitinib had a greater effect than placebo at 100 mg [RR = 2.22, 95% CI 1.80-2.72] and 200 mg [RR = 3.28, 95% CI 2.59-4.17]. Abrocitinib improved PSAAD, POEM, DLQI, CDLQI, and HADS more than a placebo. Conclusion: In conclusion, this meta-analysis preliminarily demonstrated that abrocitinib had higher efficacy and safety in the treatment of moderate-to-severe AD in adolescents and adults. In addition, abrocitinib could rapidly relieve itching, and effectively improve symptoms and signs, with a greater effect at the dosage of 200 mg than 100 mg.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The natural fermentation of multispecies microbial communities is responsible for unique flavors of winery regions of the eastern foothills of the Ningxia Helan Mountains in China. However, the participation of different microorganisms in the metabolic network for the development of important flavor substances is not clearly defined. Microbial population and diversity on different fermentation phases of Ningxia wine were analyzed by metagenomic sequencing approach. RESULTS: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and ion chromatography were used to identify flavor components, and 13 esters, 13 alcohols, nine aldehydes and seven ketones were detected in volatile substances with odor activity values > 1, and eight organic acids were detected as important flavor components in young wine. Thus, 52 238 predicted protein-coding genes from 24 genera were identified in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes level 2 pathways of global and overview maps, and the genes were primarily involved in amino acid metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism. Major microbial genera (Saccharomyces, Tatumella, Hanseniaspora, Lactobacillus, and Lachancea) were closely related to self-characteristic compound metabolism and further contributed to wine flavor. CONCLUSION: This study clarifies the different metabolic roles of microorganisms in flavor formation during Ningxia wine spontaneous fermentation. Saccharomyces, dominant fungi involved in glycolysis and pyruvate metabolism, produces not only ethanol but also two important precursors, pyruvate and acetyl-CoA, which are necessary for the tricarboxylic acid cycle, fatty acid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and flavor formation. Lactobacillus and Lachancea, dominant bacteria involved in lactic acid metabolism. Tatumella, dominant bacteria involved in amino acid metabolism, fatty acid metabolism, and acetic acid metabolism to produce esters in the Shizuishan City region samples. These findings provide insights into the use of local functional strains to generate unique flavor formation, as well as improved stability and quality, in wine production. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Nondegradable polyolefin plastics, which account for >60 % of total plastic waste, trigger severe global concerns and thus demand effective management technologies. However, owing to the chemical inertness of non-polar C-C backbones in the polyolefin structure, efficient upcycling of polyolefin plastics under ambient conditions remains a great challenge. This study introduces an integrated plasma-photocatalytic technology, coupling plasma treatment with solar-driven reforming under mild conditions, for the efficient upcycling of polyolefin plastics into value-added hydrogen and gaseous fuels. The first plasma step grafts oxygenated groups, such as -OH, O-C=O, and C=O, onto the polyolefin chains, which leads to the formation of a polar and hydrophilic polymer that facilitates the subsequent reforming in the photocatalytic step. Therefore, high hydrogen production activity with a benchmark efficiency of >100 µmol g-1 h-1 was achieved. Moreover, the integrated process also demonstrates high versatility in upcycling different polyolefin plastics including polyethylene, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride. The findings provide a new avenue for plastic upcycling in an efficient and sustainable way.

RESUMO

Objective: The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether playing exergames can enhance quality of life among young adults and it examines the potential moderators. Methods: A 12-week randomized controlled trial was conducted. Quality of life was measured using the short-form 36-item version (SF-36) scale. All the participants were between 20 and 24 years old in Taiwan. Participants in the intervention group (n = 55) were asked to play exergames for 12 weeks, three times a week and 30 minutes at a time, while participants in the control group (n = 62) did not play exergames. The changes in the scores on quality of life between the beginning and the end of the 12-week trial were calculated. Independent t-tests were used to analyze the differences. Results: The intervention group participants experienced an enhanced quality of life in terms of physical functioning, role-physical (role limitations due to physical health), general health, and social functioning. Moreover, the intervention group participants who were not enthusiastic about exercisers experienced an enhanced quality of life in physical functioning, role-physical, and general health. The intervention group participants who attempted to control their weight experienced enhanced general health, vitality, and mental health. Conclusion: Playing exergaming could contribute to users' quality of life in terms of both physical and mental health.

RESUMO

Objective: Since the mental health of older adult is an important topic in the aging society, the main purpose of this study is to understand the mental health status of the older adult in China under different conditions. More importantly, although people generally believe that leisure activities can improve mental health, the impact of these activities on older adult has not yet been fully discussed. Hence, this study further explores that what kind of leisure activity is associated with mental health of the older adult given different conditions. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire survey to explore the relationships of various leisure activities on mental health among older adults under different demographics. This study used the Geriatric Depression Scale short forms scale (GDS-15) to assess the mental health of older adults. Based on a sample of 2,006 participants, both two-sample t-test and ANOVA were adopted to analyze the characteristics of mental health among specific subsamples. Results: Our findings indicated that older adults generally have higher mental health scores if they do not have chronic diseases, live with other family members, or reside in urban. First, three leisure activities including walking, Guangchangwu, and hiking have positive associations on mental health for older adults with chronic diseases. Second, the older adults living alone engaged in Guangchangwu or hiking significantly associated with their good mental health. Finally, only Guangchangwu has a significantly positive associated with the mental health of rural older adults. Conclusions: Based on our results, the government and healthcare planners can better allocate limited resources under different conditions to promote certain leisure activities, which are helpful to enhance the mental health of older adults. Guangchangwu is an activity that meets the characteristics of Chinese culture, so we further conclude that it is significantly associated with the good mental health of older adults in China.

RESUMO

Huangjiu (Chinese rice wine) is a popular and traditional alcoholic beverage in China; however, the consumption of Huangjiu readily results in hangover symptoms. The aim of this study was to identify the main components associated with behavioral inhibition, headache, and the relevant mechanisms by using a mice hangover model. The results of an open-field experiment revealed that the key biogenic amine associated with mice behavior was histamine, which inhibited the behavior activity of mice in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, histamine treatment decreased the levels of serotonin (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid. In addition, the levels of dopamine and nitric oxide, which are associated with migraine, increased in the brain tissue of mice. In addition, the expression of receptor genes of 5-HT, including Htr1a, Htr1f, and Htr2c, is essential in regulating various behaviors and mental activities. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that histamine is a key component in Huangjiu, and it is related to hangover symptoms by affecting the level of 5-HT and its receptors.

RESUMO

As an alternative and a straightforward cryopreservation biotechnological tool, liquid marble provides a promising cryopreservation approach. Currently, effective cell preservation mainly based on the addition of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and fetal bovine serum (FBS). As state-of-the-art cryoprotectant (CPA), DMSO, has intrinsic toxicity, which is the bottleneck of its widespread application. The complex compositions of FBS have the potential risks of pathogenic microorganism contamination. However, efficient cell cryopreservation using liquid marbles, a platform independent of DMSO and FBS, has not been well investigated yet. Herein, we explore the cryoprotection role of liquid marbles based on gelatin solution. Gelatin has a superior biocompatibility, which DMSO is incomparable. During a freeze-thaw cycle, gelatin produces negligible osmotic pressure, and has high ice recrystallization inhibition (IRI) activity to induce the formation of smaller and smooth ice crystals. Moreover, the specific structure of liquid marble also provides favorable supports for cell survival. The cryopreservation efficiency of mouse fibroblasts cells L929 via the gelatin-based liquid marble was as high as 90%, and the recovered cells could maintain their normal functionalities. This work opens a new window of opportunity for non-toxic and efficient cryopreservation of liquid marbles without the need of DMSO and FBS addition.

RESUMO

Ongoing soil salinization drastically threatens crop growth, development, and yield worldwide. It is therefore crucial that we improve salt tolerance in rice by exploiting natural genetic variation. However, many salt-responsive genes confer undesirable phenotypes and therefore cannot be effectively applied to practical agricultural production. In this study, we identified a quantitative trait locus for salt tolerance from the African rice species Oryza glaberrima and named it as Salt Tolerance and Heading Date 1 (STH1). We found that STH1 regulates fatty acid metabolic homeostasis, probably by catalyzing the hydrolytic degradation of fatty acids, which contributes to salt tolerance. Meanwhile, we demonstrated that STH1 forms a protein complex with D3 and a vital regulatory factor in salt tolerance, OsHAL3, to regulate the protein abundance of OsHAL3 via the 26S proteasome pathway. Furthermore, we revealed that STH1 also serves as a co-activator with the floral integrator gene Heading date 1 to balance the expression of the florigen gene Heading date 3a under different circumstances, thus coordinating the regulation of salt tolerance and heading date. Notably, the allele of STH1 associated with enhanced salt tolerance and high yield is found in some African rice accessions but barely in Asian cultivars. Introgression of the STH1HP46 allele from African rice into modern rice cultivars is a desirable approach for boosting grain yield under salt stress. Collectively, our discoveries not only provide conceptual advances on the mechanisms of salt tolerance and synergetic regulation between salt tolerance and flowering time but also offer potential strategies to overcome the challenges resulted from increasingly serious soil salinization that many crops are facing.

RESUMO

Internet information has become the main way for individuals to obtain health information. The purpose of this paper is to explore the role online information sources play in health decision-making. Specifically, we investigated the relationship between online information sources and patient satisfaction, as well as their moderating effects as compared to those of other information sources. Using logistical regression analysis, we conducted the longitudinal data on 54,027 doctors and 952,877 online doctor reviews from 3,525 hospitals in 31 provinces to test a proposed research model. The results showed that patient satisfaction was generally lower for individuals who found a doctor through online information sources. Therefore, we suggest that patients consider the doctor quality, the doctor popularity, and patient involvement. In addition, we found that the doctor popularity had a negative moderating effect between online information sources and patient satisfaction, while patient involvement had a positive moderating effect between online information sources and patient satisfaction. The study provides strategic guidance and practical implications for policies, online healthcare community managers, and patients.

RESUMO

How the plasma membrane senses external heat-stress signals to communicate with chloroplasts to orchestrate thermotolerance remains elusive. We identified a quantitative trait locus, Thermo-tolerance 3 (TT3), consisting of two genes, TT3.1 and TT3.2, that interact together to enhance rice thermotolerance and reduce grain-yield losses caused by heat stress. Upon heat stress, plasma membrane-localized E3 ligase TT3.1 translocates to the endosomes, on which TT3.1 ubiquitinates chloroplast precursor protein TT3.2 for vacuolar degradation, implying that TT3.1 might serve as a potential thermosensor. Lesser accumulated, mature TT3.2 proteins in chloroplasts are essential for protecting thylakoids from heat stress. Our findings not only reveal a TT3.1-TT3.2 genetic module at one locus that transduces heat signals from plasma membrane to chloroplasts but also provide the strategy for breeding highly thermotolerant crops.

RESUMO

The high-purity compounds (e.g., sugars and phenols) are important raw materials and chemicals, which can be produced by biomass pyrolysis. However, the direct biomass pyrolysis produces complex compounds and thus inhibiting its large-scale utilization. To increase the yield and enrichment of sugars and phenols, a green coupling process based on ethanol-Fenton pretreatment combined with fast pyrolysis is firstly proposed. The bamboo was effectively separated into the ethanol-Fenton pretreated bamboo (EF-bamboo), lignin-rich fractions, and hemicellulose-degradation intermixtures with the massive removal of inorganic metals via this process. Compared with the fast pyrolysis of raw bamboo, the levoglucosan yield of EF-bamboo increased 5.4 times and the enrichment of sugars improved from 7.6% to 59.7%. Similarly, the yield of monophenols from lignin-rich fractions increased around 0.6 times and the enrichment of monophenols increased from 25.7% to 63.5%. This work provides a green and efficient route to produce high-yield and high-enrichment sugars and phenols.

RESUMO

As a serine/threonine phosphatase, protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) is essential in numerous physiological processes. By generating a catalytic subunit of PP2A (Ppp2ca) conditional knockout (CKO) in C57BL/6 J mice, we explored the possible mechanisms of azoospermia by focusing on meiosis initiation and spermatogenesis. The deficiency of Ppp2ca in germ cells conspicuously disturbed spermatogonial differentiation and led to pachynema arrest, accompanied by significant apoptosis in germ cells and defects in programmed double-strand break (DSB) repair. While the formation of XY body was normal, respectively. Ppp2ca-deficient spermatocytes exhibited an abnormal cohesion complex degradation of chromosome, probably contributing to cell death. Furthermore, transcriptomics analysis was conducted to prove several genes involved in spermatogenesis and exhibited transcriptional dysregulations in Ppp2ca-deficient testes. Our study demonstrates the irreplaceable role of PP2A in spermatogenesis and provides more evidences of azoospermia etiology.

RESUMO

In this study, a simple and rapid method was proposed to synthesize orthorhombic α-Mo2C as catalyst for lignin catalytic pyrolysis. Biomass in-situ pyrolysis products were used as the carbon source and supporter, the carbonization of Mo precursor was realized under rapid heating. Experimental results show that Pine-Mo2C catalyst can achieve lignin pyrolysis vapor bond breaking and deoxidation under normal pressure, and the yield of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is 13.26 wt%, of which aromatic hydrocarbons with side chain account for 74%. The side chain aliphatic hydrocarbons of lignin are effectively retained, and hydrogen consumption is minimized. The characterization of catalyst and experiments of guaiacol, 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol and 4,4'-biphenol shows that efficient deoxidation is due to targeted attack of catalyst on C-O. Therefore, Pine-Mo2C shows excellent activity in promoting direct bond breaking deoxidation of lignin.

RESUMO

Grain size is a key component trait of grain weight and yield. Numbers of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) have been identified in various bioprocesses, but there is still little known about how metabolism-related QTLs influence grain size and yield. The current study report GS3.1, a QTL that regulates rice grain size via metabolic flux allocation between two branches of phenylpropanoid metabolism. GS3.1 encodes a MATE (multidrug and toxic compounds extrusion) transporter that regulates grain size by directing the transport of p-coumaric acid from the p-coumaric acid biosynthetic metabolon to the flavonoid biosynthetic metabolon. A natural allele of GS3.1 was identified from an African rice with enlarged grains, reduced flavonoid content and increased lignin content in the panicles. Notably, the natural allele of GS3.1 caused no alterations in other tissues and did not affect stress tolerance, revealing an ideal candidate for breeding efforts. This study uncovers insights into the regulation of grain size though metabolic-flux distribution. In this way, it supports a strategy of enhancing crop yield without introducing deleterious side effects on stress tolerance mechanisms.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia have not been established in Chinese. This study established criteria based on the L3-skeletal muscle index (L3-SMI) and assessed its value for outcomes predicting in cirrhotic Chinese patients. METHODS: Totally 911 subjects who underwent a CT scan at two centres were enrolled in Cohort 1 (394 male and 417 female subjects, aged 20-80 years). The data of those subjects younger than 60 years (365 male and 296 female subjects) were used to determine the reference intervals of the L3-SMI and its influencing factors. Cohort 2 consisted of 480 patients (286 male and 184 female patients) from three centres, and their data were used to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia and evaluate the value of L3-SMI for predicting the prognosis and complications of cirrhosis. RESULTS: Age and sex had the greatest effects on the L3-SMI (P < 0.001). The L3-SMI scores were clearly higher in male patients than in female patients (52.94 ± 8.41 vs. 38.91 ± 5.65 cm2 /m2 , P < 0.001) and sharply declined in subjects aged ≥ 60 years. Based on the mean -1.28 × SD among adults aged < 60 years, the L3-SMI cut-off value for sarcopenia was 44.77 cm2 /m2 in male patients and 32.50 cm2 /m2 in female patients. Using these values, 22.5% of the cirrhotic patients (28.7% of male patients and 11.9% of female patients) were diagnosed with sarcopenia. Compared with non-sarcopenia individuals, sarcopenia patients had lower body mass index (21.28 ± 3.01 vs. 24.09 ± 3.39 kg/m2 , P < 0.001) and serum albumin levels (31.54 ± 5.93 vs. 32.93 ± 5.95 g/L, P = 0.032), longer prothrombin times (16.39 ± 3.05 vs. 15.71 ± 3.20 s, P = 0.049), higher total bilirubin concentrations (41.33 ± 57.38 vs. 32.52 ± 31.48 µmol/L, P = 0.039), worse liver function (Child-Pugh score, 8.05 ± 2.11 vs. 7.32 ± 2.05, P = 0.001), higher prevalence of cirrhosis-related complications (81.82% vs. 62.24%, P < 0.001) and mortality (30.68% vs. 11.22%, P < 0.001). Overall survival was significantly lower in the sarcopenia group [risk ratio (RR) = 2.643, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.646-4.244, P < 0.001], accompanied with an increased cumulative incidence of ascites (RR = 1.827, 95% CI 1.259-2.651, P = 0.002), spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (RR = 3.331, 95% CI 1.404-7.903, P = 0.006), hepatic encephalopathy (RR = 1.962, 95% CI 1.070-3.600, P = 0.029), and upper gastrointestinal varices (RR = 2.138, 95% CI 1.319-3.466, P = 0.002). Subgroup analysis showed sarcopenia shortened the survival of the patients with Model For End-Stage Liver Disease score > 14 (RR = 4.310, 95% CI 2.091-8.882, P < 0.001) or Child-Pugh C (RR = 3.081, 95% CI 1.516-6.260, P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Sarcopenia is a common comorbidity of cirrhosis and can be used to predict cirrhosis-related complications and the prognosis.
